During December ‘18 & January ’19 I had the opportunity to spend 6 weeks in a studio/gallery in Bangalore, India. My original proposal to Asialink (the program I was funded though with the NT Government) was to build a body of work around my experience of going from the remote Australian outback to a hugely populated city and the contrast of that. The more I thought about it, the more I realised that you can’t only look at the differences, you need to also what makes it similar or find a way to truly connect to your new place in order to see what’s really there.

This concertina book came from trying to constantly explain the place I come from – the true red heart of Australia – the place where you have to constantly watch your feet when walking through the desert landscape or you miss the textures, the flora and finding the tracks left behind from the animals you rarely see. The intricate detail that you can only see when looking up close, but then also considering how it all looks from above and how all the small things come together to make one.

A Trip through the Desert combines the beautiful cotton paper I was working with in India, Curtin Springs Paper that I took with me from home, aerial photographs of the region and sketching of the detail – bringing to life the memory, feel and warmth of home.
